Aztec Society

Aztec society consisted mainly of nobles and commoners.  There were also some slaves.

Nobles

In Aztec society, nobles were the highest ranking.  They were usually related to the Aztec king and served as goverment officials.  They only made up about 5-10% of the population but lived the most comfortably.  Nobles lived in the biggest houses, ate the best food, and wore the finest clothing.

Commoners

Most of the population consisted of commoners.  Most of them were farmers that lived a simple life.  They lived in extended families, wore simple clothing, and ate simple foods like beans and corn.  However, there were also traders and artisans that were more respected and lived better lives than the normal farmer.

 Slaves

At the bottom of Aztec society were the slaves.  They were either people that had sold themselves into slavery to pay off debts or to live a more comfortable life, or they were war prisoners.  Slaves worked in the households of nobles.  They did have some rights however.  They could marry, own property, purchase their freedom, and their children were born free.
